HUZZAH!
SYMMES 9 vs. THE CINCINNATI BUCKEYES
On April 21, starting at 2:00 p.m., the Symmes 9 will challenge The Cincinnati Buckeyes to a vintage base ball game. Played by the 1860's rules, this game should provide entertainment for all.
The game of baseball is basically the same in any era - nine fielders play for nine innings, with each team trying to outscore the opposition. But there are some differences that spectators will soon note.
First things you will notice is that players do not use gloves, the bat is much heavier and more variable in size and the ball is slightly larger and softer than a baseball of today.
Another difference is that there is only one umpire. He is allowed to use both players and spectators alike to judge close plays. The umpire will not call balls and strikes, but rather issue warnings to the striker or the pitcher is the at-bat is not proceeding well.
Please come and step back into a time when base ball was a gentlemen's game and the players acted as such. Come and learn the meaning of such words as leg it, daisy cutter, whitewash, hook, stinger, ginger and many more.
This baseball game is part of a day-long event being planned to celebrate the opening of the Ross Family Log House Museum. The day starts at Noon with the Dedication Ceremony and will be followed with old-fashioned children games and tours of the log house and Meade Homestead.
